Second Act

Contemporary Wish Fulfillment With Dash of Absurdity     1/5

WTF
Never forget the radioactive Geikgo tree!

Second Act is a very typical wish fulfillment romantic comedy with two equally jaw dropping and head scratching moments to let it stand out (One of which is hinted above). Jennifer Lopez is not an actress and under delivers almost every scene, as does nearly the entire class. It's not offensively bad it doesn't do anything well enoughto call it good.

The Upside

The Upside Also has a Downside                                        1/5

There is an "upside" to the film The Upside, this years January dramady. Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston share an onscreen chemistry that lays the groundwork for some wholesome interactions throughout the run time. Unfortunately with an upside comes the implication of silver lining in a sky of stormy weather. The Upiside reflects this metaphor by burying its leads chemistry behind sloppy filming, poor pacing, questionable character actions, and cliche story beats. The greatest shame is that  Kevin Hart's comedy shines when he's more subdued making him more constantly funny then he has been in a movie in a long time (yes I include Jumanji).

Holmes and Watson

Elementary... Might be a Compliment.                                  1/5

Holmes and Watson broke something in me. Farrell and Reilly have brought such joy in there past endeavors, so why is this film so pathetic. Save for the films opening 5 minutes Holmes and Watson continuously bombarded me with humor of the lowest common denominator, pacing that sadistically crawled through its 90 Minute run time, and some of the most humiliating performances I have ever witnessed. For the love of the Queen avoid this movie like Farrell avoids competent scrips. It may not be the worst movie I have ever seen but its most certainly the most sad.
